Experience at whangara farm

On monday the 11/6/2018, my class and I went to Whangara farm to see real professional trails, nursery and more. We went there to see what it's like at a real trail.

At the trails there are all different types grass sections. In our groups we were allowed to get a sample to do a test on. The soil that my group has is phalaris and RC ( red clover ) In our groups we did a test on the soil. 2 groups did nitrogen, 2 groups did potassium and 2 groups did phosphorus. My group did potassium. The results that the tests w
ork by is colour. Potassium's base colour is black. If the colour turns black it is low in potassium. If it turns smokey grey than it is medium in potassium. And if it turns light grey than it is high in potassium. Our one turned in between high and medium.

At the nursery there were willow trees and. What they did at the nursery was they let the tree grow, and when they will cut off the biggest trunk off the tree and put it back in the ground, and it will re grow it's self into another tree and they will keep repeating it over and over again. Just down from the nursery there was a river. The river was quite dirty in regardes of the flooding.

We also went up to a hill and on top of the hill there was a measuring machine type thing that weighed and measured the rainwater. There was also a few cages on the hill. The cages were me
nt for measuring the grass.  Renee one of the people who worked at whangara farms, one of her jobs was to measure how much dry matter there is for the animals. In the caged space she presses down with her special tool 5 times. In the four corners and in the middle and that measures how much dry matter there is for the animals to eat. She does that prosess for each cage, she does it one time and then goes back in two weeks and does it again in the same spot then she moves into another spot.

observasions of pH test

Angus's dad Nick came in to our class. Nick is an Agronomist and we did a pH test on some of the dirt he brought in. My group did the test on sand. The sand is te hapara sand and it has a good amount of pH in it, so it would be good to grow plants in. We also took some awesome photos with microscope. The sand looks sooo cool through the microscope.
                            Thank you sooooo much Nick!!!

Green House

We made Green Houses for our class business. Each group made a Green House and planted one particular seed. For example my group has Rye grass and another group has Barley. We are testing witch seed grows fastest, how tall they end up growing and stuff like that. Since it is winter we needed to put plastic on the green house to keep the plants warm but we also need frost cloth so it can still breath.
